I’ve been singing barbershop songs as a member of BHS for 20 years.

Somewhere along the line, I became the “pitch guy” for our chorus. Don’t ask me how that happened! No Tombo pitch pipe back then – just the F-F kind the society sold. But a result, I have many dead pitch pipes. Over time, one pitch just gave up the ghost – usually the B-flat or E-flat. For some reason, I can’t bring myself to actually throwing them away, though. So they just sit neatly in stack in my closet.

But a year or so ago, the lead in my quartet got me a new Tombo pitch pipe as a Christmas present.

I secretly think she got tired of trying match yet another pitch pipe going slowly out of tune.

The Tombo pitch pipe has been a great tool I have to admit. It has a nice “voice” – light, bright and articulate. That seems to be the thing these days.

I always struggle trying to find B-flat on the Tombo pitch pipe.

One thing really bothers me, however. Maybe it’s because I’m a lead who sings baritone in my quartet, but I always struggle trying to find B-flat on the Tombo pitch pipe. You can’t sing barbershop without B-flat! Yeah, I know, I know – B-flat is the same as A-sharp. But I look like a deer in the headlights standing on stage, under the bright lights, trying to make that conversion under pressure. Maybe it’s not a problem for you. It is for me – and I bet it is for others as well.

Recently BHS came out with their sticker to help with this – let’s call it – issue. It’s nice. And it’s only a buck! Trouble is, if that’s all you want, you have to pay another $7 just for shipping. Not a real solution.

Now I don’t know about you, but my 50+ year-old eyes have trouble seeing the small print on that sticker – especially in the dark, back stage. So with that one I’m still the deer in the headlights fumbling to find the pitch on stage as the audience waits and my quartet gives me that “look” again.

So I came up with my own solution – a sticker for my Tombo pitch pipe with all the sharps and flats and letters big enough that even I can read. It even has the “Circle of Fifths” – whatever that’s for!
